I’m building an artists website to help novice artists record and showcase their work for free. I also want to give the artists a little freedom to manage their own page, post news and gigs etc.

For this reason I choose to use WordPress Multisite installation.

I want the Multisite to work seamlessly together as one website, but I don’t have a clue as to where to begin in terms of data structure and manageability.

Could someone please help me realize this project?

    Thank you Matt Knowles.

I’m not looking for a paid solution, I’m looking for some tips on building a proper data structure and ways to manage it afterward.

I hope to learn a few things along the way.

For the record, I’m not talking about building a theme.

Okay, so sure, there are several ways you could do this – including just setting up one site (not using Multisite) and giving each artist a “role” via WP’s default system of roles and capabilities –

IF you do want to use Multisite, you should know that the learning curve is very steep, especially if you are not experienced with WP already (don’t know if that’s you or not). If you just look around this forum, you’ll see how complicated it can be :)! That said, if you want to learn how to do it, these are a good place to start:

    Thank you WPyogi,

I’m an experienced WordPress user, and I’ve created a fully functional website. But it has limitations and foreseeable issues that a multisite could potentially fix.

I’ve successfully installed a multisite, and played with it for awhile to get to know this feature a bit.
I just don’t have a clue as to how to merge them into one website, because everything is very much disconnected from one another.

Questions that comes to mind are:

    – How can I give an artist a default template to work with?
    – What if I have 100+ registered artists and I make some changes, do I manually need to apply changes to all child sites?

These are just a fraction of the questions that comes to mind when I think about multisites.
I’m happy to spend a year reading a book if it helps me achieve my goal.

I’m not a developer, but I know my way around if I really want or have to. πŸ™‚

Personally, I like to work with a single site.
But like I said, it had some limitations… and it sometimes can be hard to find someone who is willing to help me guide through these limitations. So I try to find other ways to hopefully realise this project, because the last thing I want is to be stuck at one place for months without progressing.

    Hi,
I just came across this, when you scroll down there is a section about allowing users to create their own sites and a plugin that helps with it:

Maybe this helps you a bit!

    Thank you finnnn,

I’ve already read this, but I’m not looking to run a profile website for artists. I can’t compete with facebook anyway. Maybe something for the future.

The idea behind FadingMusic is to help novice artist record music in my studio and showcase their work for free. FadingMusic is also a source for news, reviews, interviews etc.

A artist page is there to show information about the artist I’m writing about. If I can give artists a little control over their content using multisites, all the better.

This is also a great way for me to learn about multisites. But there seems to be little or no information about what I want to achieve.

Hello, I’ve been using WordPress for quite awhile, and multisite for 2 years. I would suggest that you not use multisite as your solution.

You can easily give artists their own page in a single site setup. And as stated above, you would be much better off using a plugin to manage roles & capabilities. Just because you can do the things you mentioned in multisite, does not confirm that you should.

Here are 2 posts I used to help make my decision on Multisite or Single install.

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you silentprints,

I think you’re right, but a single site poses some issues as well.
I’m definitely going to need some help building a single site.

The theme with adjustments are already built, and I know what plugins I need.

I decided to use a single installation, multisite is just too much work for me alone at this point.

You can easily give artists their own page in a single site setup.

Can you give me an example please.
I’ve been trying to build an easy to maintain artist page that includes:

    Biography
Discography (I’m currently using WooCommerce for this)
    News
    Reviews
    Interviews
    Media

I have tried every plugin out there, and I even build my own system.
But the system I’ve build wasn’t easy to maintain.

    Thanks in advance.

You’d have to craft the file to pull in all that other stuff, and I’m not sure what you mean by ‘Media’ but an Author Page can show all that.

Unless you’re really talking about each author having thir own site.
