Need a plugin and also upgrade

I see my askismet plugin is needing upgraded to the current one. I also would like to install a twitter plugin so my friends the check the blog can see via twitter when I make a new post.

I’ve been attempting to just use the install button to do this. I enter in my ftp credentials but the system returns that it can’t find the directory wp-content. I know it’s there as my blog has been running on my server now for over six months. I can also see the folders and files in /var/www/html just as you’d expect when using filezilla.

There’s an option to install a zip file directly but it fails as it says I don’t have permission to change files. I’m running this on a ClearOS webserver/ftp server/perimeter firewall. Everything works great except for this not being able to install features or upgrade. I also see now that there’s a new version of wordpress out but I’m afraid what type of havoc i’ll wreak trying to get that ugraded. Thanks for the suggestions.
