Support » Requests and Feedback » Need a new "Owner" role

  • This is a request to WordPress to create a new user role, “Owner.” The Owner would rank above an Administrator and have all the capabilities of an Administrator, but could not be deleted by an Administrator.

At present, when a site owner wants their site to be built, they have to give Administrator privileges to the web development company. This company could, deliberately or by mistake, delete the site owner’s Administrator account. If the site owner had an “Owner” role, their account would never be deleted.

With increasing numbers of businesses turning over their WordPress sites to web development companies, but still wishing to retain some control over their sites, an “Owner” role would be helpful.

That’s counterintuitive. On a single WordPress site the Administrator role is the top of role hierarchy. Adding a role above that… what would happen when another Owner role deleted another Owner account? Do you ask for a Super Owner after that? 😉

That won’t be solved with a new role. This is a problem with educating the new owner.

If someone is handed a site then they need to become familiar with backups and being able to restore those backups. They also need to understand the basics of account management.
