My three wordpress sites are suddenly very slow to respond!

    I have 3 sites which, overnight, have become very slow to respond.

    I have contacted my host provider and they are not hitting any CPU, disk or memory usage. The sites seem to be just waiting.

    Other non-wordpress sites work fine for me on the same hosting provider & even PHP/MySQL based pages written by myself (separate to wordpress stuff) on the same domain work instantly!

    One site I have upgraded to WordPress 3.6, but the other two sites I have not upgraded for a month or two. They suddenly started going slow at 01:30 BST on Tue 6 Aug 2013.

    On one of the sites I have two plugins enabled (“Jetpack” & “All-In-One SEO Plugin”). I disabled both and the site gave instant response! I then enabled AIOSEOP and it became slow again, so I disabled AIOSEOP and it became quick again! I then enabled Jetpack and it became slow again, so I disabled Jetpack and it became quick again! I then enabled both and it became slow again.

    Is anyone else experiencing this issue??

  • Right… I’ve done a bit more testing…

    On one site I have only two plugins installed (Jetpack & AIOSEOP).

    Site Slow…
    Disabled both plugins.
    Site FAST!
    Enabled Jetpack (without re-authorizing).
    Site FAST!
    Re-authorized Jetpack.
    Site Slow…
    Disable Jetpack.
    Site FAST!
    Enabled AIOSEOP.
    Site Slow…
    Disabled AIOSEOP.
    Site FAST!
    Enabled Jetpack (without re-authorizing).
    Site FAST!
    Enabled AIOSEOP.
    Site Slow…
    Re-authorized Jetpack.
    Site Slow…

    What is going on here? Any ideas?!?!?

    Have you tried enabling error logging for you domains? This should be the first thing you should do. This can either be done within your (most) control panel. Or via a .htaccess file, something similar to;

    # enable PHP error logging
    php_value error_reporting 30719
    php_flag log_errors on
    php_value error_log /var/www/php_error_your_domain.log

    I haven’t tried that yet, but all three web sites have just suddenly got back up to speed again! No idea why!

    01:30 – CRITICAL – Socket timeout after 10 seconds
    13:59 – HTTP OK: HTTP/1.1 200 OK – 24598 bytes in 2.025 second response time

    Very strange… I guess I’ll wait and see how it all goes over the next few hours/days… if it goes wrong again I will turn on the PHP error logging by your suggestion 🙂

    Having similar issues and I also have Jetpack installed – and a whole bunch of other plugins.

    Am about to go down the road of disabling them one by one…oh the joys!

    Running like a dream for months at this level.
    Upgrade to 3.6 complaints! And am about to go on holiday!!!
