please contact the seller of the theme for support.
commercial themes are not supported by this forum.
I’m just guessing that that is where the problem lies. Is it possible that it could be something else?
The error says it’s in the index.php file — that’s a theme file. And since you don’t have a problem when using another theme, that too, says it’s the theme.
I’ve tried to contact the web designer (Nacho)of the theme – to no avail. Can anyone explain why WordPress would allow someone to just pull their theme without warning users? It’s not listed anymore and I have to start all over again trying to find one I like and then customize it – totally not my thing to be doing … I’m not a techie. Thanks for your help guys!
Wait a second, is your site on WordPress.COM? Is this the theme you are using?

I think it was this one.

Which at $1.99 is the least expensive commercial theme I’ve ever seen…
Well, at any rate, to go back to the question, WordPress has absolutely no control over what a theme developer does or does not do. It’s certainly a bummer when a theme is dropped and I’m sure everyone is sympathetic to anyone in your situation, but the best thing to do at this point is find another theme (preferably a widely used one that is well-supported) and get on with fixing whatever you need to. If you use a free theme from here , you’ll get help here on the forums.
Yes, WPyogi, that’s the theme. It didn’t cost anything when I started with it and if Nacho wanted to charge (or WordPress or whomever) then they should have told me and not just pulled it. It’s not even available now (from what I can tell) at all from the WordPress options – even for $1.99.
if you are working with a version of the theme before is became commercial (must be about 2 years old ?), start by pasting the full code of index.php into a http://pastebin.com/ and post the link to it here – http://codex.wordpress.org/Forum_Welcome#Posting_Code
Certainly agree, though, as I said, WP has no control — and really, you never know what the story is with that developer — things happen in people’s lives, etc…
But since your site is on WordPress.COM?? If so, you need to be asking all this on their forums…these are for self-hosted sites.
Alchymyth – I don’t know what that means – too much ‘code’ – but I’ll get someone more tech’knowledgeable to figure it out – thanks
WPyogi – This was the WordPress Forum I found when I tried to find support – there is no ‘contact’ or ‘support’ for WordPress as far as I can tell. I don’t even know what you mean – ‘self-hosted’ sites. My ‘host’ is Dreamhost and they just popped in a random theme template for me that I had to change twice. They tried but – not so helpful. Thanks.
Okay, you have a self-hosted sites. That theme was also offered on WordPress.COM — which are hosted sites. That’s why I was not sure. But post your code as suggested and alchymyth may be able to help you fix the problem with the theme — he’s a total code and WP wizard!

Is that what you mean / want?
I have a temporary new template but what I like about Chateau is the Header goes all the way across the top and no side bars. I haven’t had time to check other templates and I’m pretty sure Chateau is no longer available through WordPress and the designer isn’t replying to me. Anything you can do to help is much appreciated. Thanks!
