I hate it when that happens. More than likely your theme is either not compatible with your version of WordPress or the theme files were corrupt.

You’ll need to login to your server via FTP, navigate to /blog/wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory containing the theme that you activated. This will force the Default theme to activate when you visit the blog. Now, delete the bad theme and either re-install it or choose another one.

    Hi,

In addition to macmanx’s response, also check with these options:

    – Remove all unwanted code from htaccess
    – Upgrade your wordpress to the latest version
    – Disable plugins via FTP to your blog and rename the plugins directory.

    Thanks,

    Shane G.

Thank you .. I just tried what you suggested. What I did was rename each theme that I thought I may have used .. still nothing on the blog:( I guess I will rename each one 1 at a time and refresh … that is all I can think of to do since you suggested this. I will eaither be back with a yippee or a boohoo .. thank you for helping ~Sherrie

thank you Shane .. will try that too!! πŸ™‚

Try re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and your wp-config.php file – from a fresh download of WordPress.

“guys” I have tried all that you have said and I still have nothing but blank white pages and the bar on the bottom of firefox says done no matter what I try and test:( I have also tried the site in explorer and it also is nothing but a blank white page. I have only used the blog for a few months but I have never had a problem until now:(

My main thing is losing all that has been posted about my daughter and her cancer and the replies to the postings .. everything else .. could care less right now. Are those postings on my computer? anywhere?

Thank you very very much for your help and any more help

Well, I hope you haven’t lost anything. Before I continue, let’s just confirm that you have done all of the following:

    1. Forced WordPress to use the Default theme by logging in via FTP, accessing /blog/wp-content/themes/, and renaming all directories except “default”.

    2. Forced all plugins to deactivate by following this guide.

    3. Removed unwanted code from the .htaccess file.

If all of that has been done, try downloading WordPress again and re-uploading all of the files except everything in the /wp-content/ directory.

If that doesn’t help, you may have fallen victim to a hack that went around recently. Stay calm and follow this guide.

Thank you macmanx .. the one thing I have done is stay calm .. been on computers too many years to panic I just don’t know wordpress so it’s not a “I can fix it” thing .. ya know ..

I will keep trudging .. I can’t seem to find the htaccess file but will keep looking:)

Thank you so much for your help

You’re welcome! If you don’t have a .htaccess file in your blog directory (make sure that your FTP client is set to view invisible files), then there’s no need to worry about it.

If you have made any changes in the new theme or in wp_config file please check each again within your editor i.e. Dreamweaver or what ever editor you use. Open the wp-config.php scroll to the bottom and find the last ?> that closes the php and remove any blank lines below as “?>” should be the absolute last line. Any blank lines below corrupts the config file and files such as wp-admin/setup-config.php Sometimes making changes will add empty lines below the closing ?>.

I wanted to say thank you to everyone who has tried to help me. I am sure that even though I was not able to get back my blog and lost my postings on my daughter and her cancer maybe you were able to help someone else who never posted but read.

I found out my host will not show the htaccess file but I have been with them for almost 10 years so …

I have messed with and written over and looked in and on and on that I have more likely than not ruined anything that might have helped me get back up and running. I tried the fix file (renaming and all) and it just starts explorer and then asks if I want to save or open the file .. that’s all it does over and over.

I did copy all my files from the server over to my harddrive before I tried doing anything at all in the off chance that the postings are in there somewhere .. one has to have hope or there is nothing so I am hoping that someday I will learn more about php and will be able to fix the blog.

Thank you again and I do hope that your postings were able to help others.

    ~Sherrie

Check your theme settings in the WordPress Admin under Appearance. The theme that I had set was broken and once I reinstalled it and activated it my site worked fine.
