Support » Fixing WordPress » My site is down after function.php modification.

  • Hi everyone,
    I was working on my company’s website, adding a shortcode in the sidebar, and I tried to modify “function.php” after seeing a tutorial on the web.
    I understood in this tutorial that I had to write : add_shortcode(‘name-of-the-shortcode’) at the end of the function.php to activate the short code. Which I did.

    I clicked on the ‘button’ “apply the the changes” and then, it freezed… I closed the window, tried to open the website to see the modification but the website won’t open anymore, there is absolutly no response.

    I can’t log in admin mode, it doesn’t load at all.
    Is there anything I can do to restore my website?

    Thank you very much if you can help…
    Ps: I think it’s needless to say that i’m french, so sorry for my english…

    you will need to use FTP to temporarily rename your theme’s folder;

    this should activate the default theme, and allow you back into the admin area.

    you can then try to either replace funtions.php with an unedited copy, or to repair the error.

    once that is fixed, you can use FTP to rename your theme’s folder back to the original name, and activate your theme again.

    Thanks a lot for your answer!
    I’ll try that as soon as I find the host name, login and password.
    (I’m not the creator of this website, can’t I avoid asking him these things?)

    Thanks again for this answer alchymyth.
