Support » Fixing WordPress » My site is completely messed up HELP!

  • Ok, so I was trying to add a sidebar to this site so I was fiddling with the functions.php file and now the website redirects to edit.php and says:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘}’ in /home/a7070628/public_html/wp-content/themes/isis/functions.php on line 445

So I obviously messed something up but now I can’t do anything on the site, only see this error message. There was alot of code I was editing out and I think I took a stray closing } with me and updated the file to see if it worked… Please help this is driving me crazy

    very awesome

You’ll need to use FTP to connect to your server, then download the file, make your edits, and re-upload it again. Unfortunately there’s just no other way.

And let this be a small lesson… Don’t play around with the files on the life site! At least use FTP to make the changes on files. That way you can always “undo” any changes in yor text editor and re-upload the files. That’s not possible through the online editor.

Yeah I was being kinda reckless. Thank you for your quick response I read some other responses too about this issue once I calmed down. I know what to do now and know how to avoid this situation in the future!

    very awesome

Don’t be too worried about it. We all make these sorts of mistakes. this one just happens to lead to feelings of extreme fear for a little while. If you’ve learnt how to do it better in the future, it’s a good thing overall.

Just use FTP upload original file replace your current functions.php.
As @catacaustic said, do not edit file in live website, make changes you want at localhost then upload it.

Just got the site back! So happy now! Thanks! I’m still learning how everything works in the backend of things so glad we have support forums
