Support » Plugin: BlockMeister - Block Pattern Builder » my patterns do not show in wp 5.9

  • Resolved donbowman

    (@donbowman)

    I was using blockmeister w/ wp 5.8 w/o trouble.

in wp 5.9, my patterns do not show (the category doesn’t show).

in the ‘block inserter’, i see
    ‘Blocks’,’Patterns’,’Reusable’ as menu
in ‘Patterns’, I see ‘Buttons’, ‘Gallery’, … ‘Uncategorised’
But my category is not present (e.g. its not on the pulldown).

If i look in the Dashboard, under ‘Block Patterns’, under all they are there.

After some trial of moving them to a new category, i see, under ‘Block Patterns/All Patterns’:
    ‘All(12) | Mine(5)’
But, the list below it is now empty.

In the ‘categories’ tab under block patterns, i see my name, w/ a slug of default.

    select id,post_date, post_title, post_name,guid,post_status,post_parent from wp_posts where post_type = 'blockmeister_pattern';

  • I am piggy-backing on this question. I only tried this plug-in for the first time with WordPress 5.9. Other than that, I have the same problem.

I have added a pattern successfully, but I cannot access it when designing a page.

The language below is a paraphrase of donbowman’s, but it accurately describes my experience.

On the Dashboard, under ‘Block Patterns/All Patterns’, my pattern is present with the default category assigned. On the Dashboard under ‘Block Patterns/Categories’, my category is listed with a count of 1 next to it. Everything looks good, but I cannot access the pattern from the block inserter. The category is not present in the pulldown, and when I search for the pattern by name, its not to be found.

I did some testing. With only WP 5.9 and our plugin I couldn’t reproduce the issue you report. But after I installed the latest Gutenberg plugin the custom categories were no longer available. So it seems something changed in the latest edition of the Gutenberg plugin which I need to further investigate.

Could you please let me know whether you do have the Gutenberg plugin active?
And if so could you please deactivate it and see if it solves the issue?

I do have the gutenberg plugin active!

I’m not 100% sure its safe to deactivate (since we may be using some features from it), i can see about testing on my staging site.

On my staging site, w/ the gutenberg active: blockmeister has the problem above.

On my staging site, w/ the gutenberg not active: blockmeister shows my patterns correctly.

    So your intuition was correct.

So far I established this issue has been introduced with Gutenberg 13.0. I tested with 12.9 and the issue wasn’t present with that version. I will continue searching for the cause and a solution and will try to release a fix a.s.a.p, preferably before the release of 6.0.

Thank you for keeping on this. I appreciate that it takes some effort to stay on top of these things.

Update: the issue was acknowledged as a regression by the core theme. Since Gutenberg 13.0 the core theme moved the loading of patterns to the REST api without backwards compatibility with existing implementations.

The solution is tracked here: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/pull/40818

So this is likely to be resolved by the WP core theme before WP 6.0 is released.

Nonetheless, we probably will update BlockMeister in the future to adhere to the newly introduced REST method of loading custom patterns.

    thanks for the update.

Update: unfortunately, the WordPress patch mentioned above didn’t fix the backwards compatibility issues. So we had to tackle this ourselves and are happy to report this has been fixed in the latest release.

We tested with the latest Gutenberg plugin active and also with WordPress 6.0 RC4.

Could you please update to BlockMeister 3.1.0 and let me know if things are working again for you too (with the latest Gutenberg plugin active)?

    Thanks for reporting the issue!

And thanks for fixing the issue. Also, thanks for keeping on top of the issue and keeping us informed. I can confirm that it works now for me.

    fix works for me.
    thanks!
