  • Hi guys!

I recently finished building a site for a friends B&B.

I used the Thesis theme as the basis for the design. I am not, and have had no training in web design so please cut me a little slack! Please have a look and tell me what you think.

Also, if anybody has any ideas for how I could make the website better then please feel free to let me know!

    The site is at:

  • Hi, Dan,
I think this is a really decent site….very easy to navigate.
    One suggestion, though:
Reversed text (white on black) might be attractive, but it’s difficult to read. This is especially true for people who are coming to your site immediately after being on another site with the more common black on white. Kind of like walking into a dark moive theatre after being outside in the bright sun. Our eyes have to struggle a bit to make the transition. This is definitely not something you want visitors to experience.

    Good luck on the project!

Very nice site especially for someone who has had no previous experience. Would disagree with keebee as you are using a yellowish tint on your body text which is perfectly acceptable.

I’m inclined to agree about the yellow-on-black text but I don’t think you need to unravel the whole thing. The problem is the width of the text column. It’s so wide that the eye has to strain to read across (that’s why newspapers are divided into multiple columns).

I would suggest you restrict the width of the column. You can do this by going into HTML version of each page and pasting the following line of code into the top of the page:

    <div style=”float: left; width: 75%;”>

Note the above instruction will reduce the width of the text to 75% of the original. You can play with it by changing the number.

    How it will look:

This page is at 100% (unchanged)

    This page is at 75%

    Hope this helps!

Also a good point made by raoulspence….body text column is a little wide. Keep in mind that we’re not just talking about personal preference here. This stuff has been researched, tested, analyzed for decades…in an attempt to find out what helps (or hurts) reader comprehension. It’a all well-documented science, actually.

I disagree with <thebettertwin> — yellow text doesn’t do anything to change the basic problem. It’s still reversed text, which has been proven to reduce reader comprehension.
