I really like it. I’d set the flower image as the background of the header rather than including it with HTML. It would load last, giving the impression of a faster overall load time. It took about two seconds to completely download the page for me.
Edit: after visiting a couple pages there seems to be something else slowing things down; I don’t think it’s the image. Are you pulling data from an external server, such as flickr?
If it was just slowdown I could live with it…. but I’m on satband (if low-end), and it takes me three refreshes to get ANYTHING to show. No graphics at all…. so it’s hard to say what the site is really like.
I do note that every site I visit with the “make poverty history” banner these days is like molasses running uphill at the north pole in January….
Aha! There’s a clue. Why not save a local copy of the image and reference your images folder instead?
Also, on the front page you have an overview of the site content. The navigation bar links to all of your main pages, but people will be looking at the images in the middle with the descriptions beside them. Why not link those titles, too? I didn’t even notice the nav bar at first.
