What happend to my page creator? What is this new BLOCK thing and how do I turn it off or delete it. I did not ask for it and I do not want it. I do not know how to use it and I am right in the middle of building a new site. I have enough troubles with that alone without this new crap I can not use.

WARNING.. If you upgrade to 5.1 it will ruin your week.

The new block editor was introduced in WordPress 5.0, it has been in development for 2 years: https://wordpress.org/news/2018/12/bebo/

I recommend just trying it out for a bit, there isn’t a learning curve necessarily, more like an “unlearning curve.” It’s overall easier to make cool things now than it was with the old editor, but you don’t have to take my word for it. This video covers why the new editor exists, what it can do, and its future: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWlfp-1Q19I (skip to 9:50 for the sizzle reel).

If you really don’t want to use the new editor now, install and activate https://wordpress.org/plugins/classic-editor/ to restore the old editor.

    Thank you very much James,.

I do beg to differ about the learning curve.

I do not understand anything on the page. I do not understand the symbols at the top left or on the right. I would have better luck flying an alien spacecraft with the weird symbol things. There is no doubt that there has been a TON of work put into this. No one could change something this dramatically over night. The analogy that comes to mind is how to kill a frog. You heat the pan slowly and the frog will relax and cook. Toss them into hot water and they will just jump out.

I am jumping out. Slow small changes would have kept me in it.

Thank you for your help it is honestly a god send for me. I am not a tecky..

The best way to learn something, for me at least, is to just use it. Don’t know what a button in the editor does? Click it, you can always undo. πŸ™‚

If you like learning backwards, I love that way too, https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ is actually a live editor. Click around and edit it, it’s fun. πŸ™‚

The new editor is built on blocks, and there are a ton of blocks included. Here’s sort of a text “script” that I’ve been using to describe it:

    1. “I want to start off with a cover image.”
    2. Hit that ‘+’ icon to start a new block, search for the “Cover” block and choose it.
    3. The block walks you through the necessary steps, like uploading the image, adding a text overlay, it walks you through it all.

    4. “I want some text.”
    5. Good news, “Paragraph” is the default block, type away.

    6. “I want to add an image.”
    7. Hit that ‘+’ icon to start a new block, search for the “Image” block and choose it.
    8. The block walks you through uploading the image, then just drag and drop to place.

(bonus point, lots of blocks can be dragged and dropped as desired)

And so on. It’s a different way of using WordPress, as someone who has been using WordPress for 14 years, I totally get it. But, I think overall this new editor is much more straight-forward. Plus, you can finally align images and columns next to each other, by just dragging and dropping even, thank goodness. πŸ™‚

Whoops, and I forgot to mention that there’s some great documentation at https://gogutenberg.com/

Plus of course the Classic Editor plugin if you really want to go back. πŸ™‚

As I said before you are a very kind person and the information you have provided is fantastic. If I were not in the middle of building a new site and had time to play with the new toys I would but this poped up right in the middle of a very large build.

Aint nobody gots time for taht.

    LOL..

Jeff, install the Disable Gutenberg plugin and your old editor will come back:

@macmanx, could you please clarify why my post above was removed and then restored? If I violated a forum rule I’d like to know what it is to avoid doing so in the future. Thank you.

I’m not 100% sure, there’s nothing wrong with it. An automated system may have caught it as spam.
