• I have removed the footer links from a downloaded theme.

Now my blog’s front and backend only displays the following message:

This theme is released under creative commons licence, all links in the footer should remain intact

How do I resolve/reverse this or work around it to continue working on my blog?

  • Since the theme was released under CCL, you should keep the footer links. Some themers use javascript inserted in functions.php to “disable” theme if you delete the footer credit links. Some have the functions inserted elsewhere to make sure that theme isn’t usable if you delete credits.

Having said that, there are those who download free themes and repackage the theme as theirs with CCL and put spam links/credits at the footer. Geez. Open style.css and check the theme URL vs URL of where you downloaded the theme if in doubt of ownership and license.
