Support » Developing with WordPress » Mutliple Authors without Multiple Users?

  • So, I have a site that features posts by many different authors. I am running the site, and I want to connect each author with his/her post. I do not, however, want any of the authors (there are way too many) to be added as users to WordPress, as I don’t have the time to train them in how to use WordPress.

Is there a way to have multiple authors available in WordPress, but NOT as users with author/contributor access?

  • You could set users up for them but not give them their login details and set the passwords to something extremely difficult.

You could also use a plugin to completely restrict their access so that if someone did log in on the account they still wouldn’t be able to do anything.

Those are probably the simplest solutions.

Use Rolemanager, and ad all the users as authors – then set their rights to nothing at all.

I’m in a similar situation and considered doing it using custom fields, but it’s easier to leverage the built-in attributes of users (mostly I needed author archive pages). Basically did what @wphelpcenter said, setting up accounts using the same password and administrative email. This works pretty well for creating multiple accounts with the same email address:

So far as I can tell it’s working great on my installation of 2.8.6. Only problem I ran into was a multiple email address error when trying to edit users’ accounts after they’d been created (to change roles, etc.) Fixed easily by commenting out lines 177-178 of /wp-admin/includes/user.php

I’m also using to import users in bulk, but same deal, have to get rid of lines 176-180 to stop the email address check.

Now I’m looking for a better way to pick authors when posting, preferably an autocomplete text box…the drop-down on the post page isn’t cutting it. seems to be working so far…

What not use a custom taxonomy?
