  • Hi all,

I’m setting up a new website for an org with three campuses. I’ve installed multisite on Mediatemple’s (gs) service and am using their ‘preview domain’ feature to build the site while the old site is still live at a different host. It works fine for the base site (, but when I added a subdirectory for one of the campuses ( and then try to preview the site, I get an error that states “Error establishing a database connection”.

So my question is whether anyone knows if it’s possible to build sites using subdirectories on Mediatemple’s “preview domain” feature?

I’ve already contacted MT and they say they’re not WP developers and can’t help.

    Anyone? Thanks guys.

Hey there! Sorry to hear you’re having this issue.

The problem does not appear to be how you are using the access domain (preview domain) as you are using it correctly. However, “error establishing database connection” can be caused by a few things. I found this resource below that might be able to help you:

How to Fix the Error Establishing a Database Connection in WordPress

When you called into (mt) Media Temple, the agent was correct. This is an issue outside the scope of (mt) Media Temple support as it applies more to WordPress than it does to (mt) Media Temple products. However, we usually try to do our best to help regardless, and if we were not able to at the time, I truly do apologize, that is not the norm.

If I can help you with anything, please feel free to Tweet at me @mediatemple. I’m here 24/7 🙂
