I’m wondering if anyone can help with a Multisite Domain Mapping question I have? I’m wanting to use a mixture of sub directories and sub domains using the “WordPress MU Domain Mapping” plugin. My multisite is currently setup in Sub Directories. Here’s some examples of what I’m trying to do. This is for a College and Department website setup (not real site names just for example). I’m wanting the college main site to be the multisite root. There will be some sub directory sites off of the main site, like /it, /graduate and some others. I’m wanting to add some sub domains, like a department site and also have some sub directory sites off of the sub domain site (see below).

http://college.com – is the multisite main site and
    http://college.com/it – is in the /it folder

http://biology.college.com – is in the /biology folder and is mapped correctly using a cname entry. In the WordPress MU plugin there’s a domain setup for biology.college.com and it’s marked as primary (this works properly)

What I can’t get to work
http://biology.college.com/faculty-site – this site is in a folder called /faculty-site. I’m not sure how to setup the site correctly. I’ve tried adjusting the site’s domain in the “Info” and “Settings” tab when you click on “All Sites” and “Edit” on the site.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

It seems that you want to use take a sub-domain site and have sub-directories sites from it? If that is so, WP multisite does not do that. You might be able to do that if you had multiple instances of WP.

BTW, I see you say “folders.” If you are configuring WP correctly, there are no folders or directories. Those sites, /it or /biology, are virtual. Just thought I would mention that in case you are doing something wrong.

Thanks for the response. Sorry, I meant path instead of folder.

Multiple Multisite installs will be a last resort. It would be the easiest way to do what I’m trying but we’re trying to stay away from multiple Multisite Installs due to the pricing structure setup with one of the departments on campus.

I’m trying to have a sub directory multisite install that has sub domains mapped to it and have sub directories off the sub domains. So far I’ve been able to successfully do the initial install, have sub directories off the root and map a sub domain using a cname. Like
    college.com
    college.com/it
    department.college.com
So I know this much is possible, I just don’t know how to do sub directories off of the sub domain like department.college.com/class
    .

I’ve seen a couple posts saying this should be possible by using the WordPress MU Domain Mapping plugin but no one says how and those posts are really old.

Try this configuration hack if you want a site like http://biology.college.com/faculty-site

    1) Create a sub-directory site of /faculty-site
    2) From the faculty-site Settings menu, modify the Siteurl and Home from http://college.com/faculty-site to http://biology.college.com/faculty-site

I think that should work. I have done something like this in the past but do not have any sites with this config.

I’d link, but my plane is landing…

Jonathan, you can use both subdirectory and subdomain in multisite? HOW can yo do that?
