• Hi all,

Please help with the info concerning the correct configuration of multisite using separate subdomains (example: main site: domain.com – english, secondary subdomain – fr.domain.com -french, another language on gr.domain.com – german language ect…).

When trying to create a new site under multisites its giving only the option to create a site with a folder, example domain.com/fr

    What I need is:

    1. To have separate subdomains for each language.
    2. All sites shares same design and theme
    3. Each sub-domain is on enother language (including the wordpress translation)

    Quesitons:

    1. How to create additional sites in wordpress multisite feature with subdomains?
How to create those subdomain in the way that they will use different DB and and may be some different plugins in feature.
But for the beginning will need just a copy of the main site with the same design.

    2. What will be the best practice as a language button switch? Need something simple, just to switch between subdomains, maybe even not the same pages, just redirection and opening of main page of each subdomain, when a language is switched.
Is there any ready to use language switch buttons?
    Using Vantage premium theme.

    3. All the contents in different languages will be translated manually and probably will differ with the time. So, presently it will look similar, but in the future different sites on different languages may have different pages.

Maybe someone can refer me to a known documentation about configurations of above descriptions.

    Thank you in advance!

If when you create a new subsite, you are only able to create subdirectory sites (domain.com/fr), then you installed multisite as a subdirectory network, not a subdomain one. I’m not sure if you can migrate from one type of network to the other– I know it won’t be simple.

Multisites by default have one database, which enables some of the features you are looking for. Why are you wanting one database? Each subsite will write some unique tables to the db…

There are a bunch of plugins that work with Google Translate to give you a “button switch”, but you are talking about something different. I think I would create simple language icons (“FR” for French or “DE” for German), link them to the appropriate subsite, and put them on on the menu or sidebar of the sites.
