Multisite Question

Somewhat new to WordPress multisite and have a question. After installing multisite, does each child site have it’s own php pages – such as index.php. I would like to modify the php pages at each multisite. Is this possible? I noticed that the edit themes is at the Network Admin so I am assuming that editing the php pages at that level would change the layout/functionality globally. Is this correct?
