Multisite path not respected

I have the path in network settings for NGG in multisite set to ‘wp-content/uploads/sites/%BLOG_ID%/files/’ but subsites insists on using ‘wp-content/blogs.dir/%BLOG_ID%/files/’ (the option to alter this path is grayed out) How to solve? Thanks.
