Multisite on Host with Domain Managed Seperately

    Hi everyone. I am trying to setup multisite to manage a few subdomains via the wildcard subdomain feature in my webhosts cpanel. The wildcard subdomain is setup correctly but after creating a new subdomain called “vault” I can neither manage it or open it.

    I believe the issue is related to the fact I have all my domain names managed separately over at NameCheap.com… and the fact that my domain name (OceanscapeArts.net) is pointed to my webhost (SiteGround.com) only via A record:

    http://www.dnswatch.info/dns/dnslookup?la=en&host=oceanscapearts.net&type=A&submit=Resolve

    SiteGround says this means that my “DNS zone is not hosted with us and the wildcard subdomains configuration is not working properly.”

    Does anyone know the proper way to set this up then? SiteGround claims they don’t know how. Do I need to create a different record over at NameCheap.com? Anyone have experience with this? I’m imagining I’m not the only WordPress multisite setup on a webhost while managing my domain separately.

    Did you park the domain via SiteGround’s admin panel?

    I’ve resolved this by setting up the wildcard as an A record over at NameCheap and pointing it to SiteGround’s server address.

    Here’s what I did (if it helps anyone else):
    At your domain registrar, go to All Hosts Records > Subdomain Settings…

    Create a new record:

    HOST NAME:  *
IP ADDRESS/ URL:  xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (your webhosts shared server address NOT your website URL)
RECORD TYPE:  A (Address)
TTL: 1800

    Save this record.

    It took about 20 minutes and everything updated and began working perfectly! Multisite is now functioning over at my webhosts server, where I can manage and create new sites on the fly!

    Again, hope this might be helpful for anyone else trying to setup Multisite on a shared server while managing their domain separately.
