I have successfully installed WordPress on my Windows server 2008 running IIS as the web server. I have followed the instructions on multisite and double checked the configuration files. However new sites created with the sub-directories architecture show a 403 when I navigate to them. Also I cannot find the new sub-directories in my wwwroot folder. What can I do to troubleshoot and fix this problem.

  2. Also I cannot find the new sub-directories in my wwwroot folder.

They're virtual, so there are no new subfolders. Don't worry about that.

Do pretty permalinks work on your main site?

I don't think that the permalinks work (i assume you mean this blog/2013/04/30/hello-world/) I get a 404 when I navigate there. However the root directory (the default site) is visible.

After importing the .htaccess rules for mod_rewrite I get a 403 when trying to visit the permalink

Partial fix. After reformatting the xml files under URL rewrite I was able to get the sub-directories to show up. The HTML formatting seems to be off when viewing it, but I do not know if this is related.

tl;dr go to IIS manager --> url rewrite and see if your rules are showing. If they do not it is likely a formatting error in your web.config file. It should complain about a specific line number until you get it right.

Yes, those are the pretty permalinks :)

IIS doesn't use .htaccess most of the time, it uses web.config. But ... not a lot of people are IIS savvy :/
