Multisite extended site names (with additional characters)

In multisite, site names have to only use letters from a to z and numbers.
Why names using characters like – . _ are not allowed?
There was a plugin named “Tukod Multisite Site Names” solving this problem but it hasn’t been updated for more than a year and not working anymore.
Is there a solution for this? (adding extra characters to site names)
