• We are investigating using multisite for a group of (separate) clients who we currently host WordPress blogs for. Our motiviation is to have all WordPress hosted on a multisite install to make managing updates to WordPress and plugins etc simpler.

We have been reading up on this option for a while but I have some questions which I can’t seem to find the answers for online:

    1. Multisite User Manager seems on the surface to be something we can use, remember our clients are separate entities so we need to be able to give them access ONLY to their own blog. Will this plugin do the job?

    2. If the Multisite User Manage does work as we hoped, will a user logged in be able to see ALL themes? Chances are we will create a unique theme for each client to match their website, but if Client A logs in I don’t want them to be able to see themes for Client B, Client C etc?

    3. Any other limitations we should be aware of? Most of the examples of using Multisite I see are based on managing 10, 20 or 30 of your OWN blogs where individual access doesn’t seem to matter. Of course we have multiple different clients who would be making their own updates to their content so before we embark on getting a server and setting this up I’d like to make sure that we are heading down the right track!

    Many thanks.

Do you mean this plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/multisite-user-management/

Helps if you link to it 😉 A lot have the same/similar names.

    1. Multisite User Manager seems on the surface to be something we can use, remember our clients are separate entities so we need to be able to give them access ONLY to their own blog. Will this plugin do the job?

Not needed unless you need to prevent them from seeing/commenting on the other sites.

Users are NETWORK created, but they only have permissions on sites they are added to.

    2. If the Multisite User Manage does work as we hoped, will a user logged in be able to see ALL themes?

Unrelated to that plugin. And no. Only site admins can see themes, and they can only see things that are Network Activated (via the Network admin pages) or that the network admin manually activates for their site. You can restrict it as much as you want.

    3. Any other limitations we should be aware of?

Limitations … Exporting from Multisite to singlesite is a pain. You need to be good with the DB. If you ever think you’ll want to not host them, remember that.

Users are added to the whole network, so a logged in user on SiteA can see SiteB. Their role is ‘Subscriber’ however, so they can’t do anything really except comment.

Yes, sorry that was indeed the plugin I was referring to.

Users are added to the whole network, so a logged in user on SiteA can see SiteB. Their role is ‘Subscriber’ however, so they can’t do anything really except comment.

A little confused, If I use the plugin this would not be a problem though? As you said earlier the plugin was “Not needed unless you need to prevent them from seeing/commenting on the other sites.”

I need to keep each site as separate as possible – ideally I don’t even want Client A to know Client B site is on the same network at all.

No,, that’s just how Multisite Work.

Ideally I don’t even want Client A to know Client B site is on the same network at all

Then you need separate installs of WP. Cause you CAN tell. Like if I’m logged in on wp.com, I can see that ew.com uses WordPress.com
