Multiple WordPress sites with forum (6 posts)

I am planning a setup for a network of wordpress blog sites and I need some setup advice. It will consist of 3 - 5 domains, all using the same theme.

Each domain is also going to have it's own forum. I would like to use PHPBB3, but this is not set in stone.

I would love to have single sign on across all 3 wordpress domains and forums. If Single Sign On is too difficult, or not possible, I do want to have user accouns synced between all three wordpress installs and forums.

I welcome any advice or plugin recommendations for this wordpress network.

  2. Single sign on works with Multisite, phpbb3 for forums like that won't.

    bbPress would, though.

I have done a bit of reading on phpBB3.

What if I setup my multisite in the following manner using phpbb3 Sub-Forums

I would need to use CNAME's or .htaccess redirects to achieve the required sub-forum URL's but in theory, this may do what I want.

    Any ideas or objections?

  4. I suppose you could (I know nothing about phpbb3 - last time I installed it, they were on 2 something...), but remember that domain1.com/forum and domain2.com/forum will point to the same place. Ditto domain2.com/sub-forum2 and domain1.com/sub-forum2

Basically if a PHYSICAL folder is in a place, all the sites will use it. So as long as no one catches on to that, you should be fine.

I have been doing some more testing.

I am not sure if I will get phpBB3 to work the way I want. It doesn't have SEF URL's for the Sub-Forums our of the box, so at the moment I have put this in the too hard basket.

I installed bbPress. This will work exactly the way I want, as it is a genuine wordpress plugin, yet the functionality of bbPress is very limited compared to a phpBB3 or vBulletin.

Any other recommendations of possible forum installations that may do what I want?

  6. Depends on what you want, eh? Not a mind reader ;) (hint: This means 'please list what functionality you're missing.' There are lots of plugins)
