 * As I understand, a premium version of WP Store Locator is currently being developed,
   and this version will allow developers to tag each store location with different
   categories.
 * Then, when the map is embedded in a page, the developer can specify in the plugin
   shortcode what category(ies) that should appear on the map?

 * I hope to have the premium version ready around new years.
 * I first have to finish coding the 2.0 version that you can download on wordpress.
   org itself. After that I have to adept the premium features I already have ( 
   but where made for the 1.x code ) to the 2.0 code.
 * The thing that complicates it a bit is that I also have to take care of freelance
   jobs to pay the bills, which sometimes slows down the development of the store
   locator plugin. But so far new years looks like a realistic timeline.
