 * I’m trying to put together a couple demo/test configurations of wordpress. I’d
like them all to share the same data set, is this possible?

 * You could simply export data from 1 site into all of the others. Or import the
   [theme unit test data file](http://codex.wordpress.org/Theme_Development_Checklist#Theme_Unit_Test)
into all of the sites. If you try to get them to share tables, they’ll have to
all use the same theme etc. – which, I assume, would not be suitable for your
   purposes.
