    Hello,

I’ve see others have had this problem as well, but couldn’t apply their solution. I’ve been getting this warning and I’ve tried both custom code placement and codeless injection (currently running codeless injection), but the warning persists. No other plugin is present that could insert the container, so not really sure what to do. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Also, I wanted to ask about the feed plugin for ht dynamic retargeting. I followed your guide, but not really sure which plugin would be great for my small webshop, or should I just upload the feed manually. Do you have any recommmendations?

    Thank you and kind regards,
    Marko

    Hi Marko,

I’ve checked your site and I do not see this error message and I only see one instance of the container code. Have you resolved this issue since your post?

For feed generation you may want to check wp all export which should provide enough flexibility to create the proper feed. (disclaimer: I am not affiliated with them, some of my friends have great experiences with this plugin)

    Hello again,

Thanks for taking the time to look it up.
Strange, it still reports the 2nd instance of the container… What I noticed is that the 2nd instance pops up after a few seconds. So first I see the GTM, FB Pixel and AdWords Remarketing tags pop up, but after a few seconds the second instance of the GTM pops up, resulting in 4 tags total. Could it be that it is only reporting it wrong to me maybe?

Thanks for the plugin suggestion, I’ll be sure to check it out!

Are you using any browser extension that is related to Google Tag Manager? Some of them provide a feature that adds a GTM container into the website without actually adding it into the theme files. This is only activated in your browser.

Only the Google Tag Assistant and Facebook Pixel Helper on Chrome. I usually use Safari, but Chrome is kept “clean” for testing and google services. I even tried switching out of preview mode of GTM, but it still shows double tag after a few seconds.

    Update:

I’ve tried turning off your plugin and then checking the site. Weird enough the GTM is active and the warning goes away, and GTM and Remarketing (AdWords) are both green, FB Pixel is blue (usually when there’s a double warning, they all start off blue and then when the double container shows up, only GTMs are green, everything else is blue… don’t know if this helps).

I have no idea why it does this. Shouldn’t there be no GTM if I deactivate the plugin? I think I may have installed it once before, then reinstalled it again in a few hours when I’ve set some things up, could it be connected to that maybe (like a leftover duplicate code)? I did not use any other mean of implementing the code besides your plugin.

    Kind regards,
    Marko

    Hi Marko,

I checked your site again and my plugin is active and the GTM container code is still added once. What I did not do is to accept the cookie consent which I now did and I can now see your GTM container code twice.

So the issue is that the GDPR plugin you are using loads the container again next to the GTM container code of my plugin.

    Thread Starter markiljas

    (@markiljas)

Ah, great catch! I’ll get in touch with the GDPR plugin author to see how to fix this. Thanks a bunch! πŸ™‚

    Plugin Author Thomas Geiger

    (@duracelltomi)

Just one more addition: there is no need to block the GTM container code itself in terms of GDPR: with that, you can control your tag firing based on the consent of the user which is usually saved into a 1st party cookie.

    Thread Starter markiljas

    (@markiljas)

Not sure if I understood correctly, are you saying that I should leave GTM container as is and block individual tags with the plugin or?

    Plugin Author Thomas Geiger

    (@duracelltomi)

“…and block individual tags with the” GTM container on the GTM UI

    Thread Starter markiljas

    (@markiljas)

I think that is slightly above my skill level, especially if I want to pair it with the GDPR plugin that is supposed to be the gateway for all of that πŸ™‚

However, they did reply this on my question: “You can see inside your static source code, that there is still an old GTag script inside your website. You need to remove this :)”

So they might be a remnant code somewhere from before, I guess…

    Plugin Author Thomas Geiger

    (@duracelltomi)

No, its that they identify the GTM container code of my plugin as the old code πŸ™‚

Anyway, you can set the placement option in my plugin to off and let this other plugin to activate the GTM container. This way, you can keep data layer content AND use your GDPR plugin in parallel.

    Thread Starter markiljas

    (@markiljas)

Oh great, thank you SO MUCH πŸ˜€ I was starting to get worried how to do this, now it’s working great!

So now everything should be working fine, I still get all the benefits of your plugin, while GDPR plugin places the container?

    Plugin Author Thomas Geiger

    (@duracelltomi)

Yes, that should be now the case.
Only I feel that this solution is a bit over secured with the possibility to loose aggregated data that could be collected without user consent. But anyway, I am not a lawyer, I can accept every scenario as long as there is a balance between the legal compliance and business interests πŸ™‚

    Thread Starter markiljas

    (@markiljas)

I agree, but we are trying to be on the safe side here. In any case, thanks a bunch for your help! πŸ™‚
