[resolved] Multiple copies of images (12 posts)

I recently spotted that this has been happening for some months now, so predates the move to 3.4 although it's definitely not fixed with the new release.

Every image I'm adding to WordPress is creating additional, unwanted copies which appear in my media library. Even if I re-use an image that's already *in* the library, another copy is made and attached to the new blog post. At a quick glance, I have around 50+ copies of one image in particular (a little film strip logo I use for movie reviews).

I've tried erasing the new ones, but unless I then go to the post and manually change it to point at the original I end up with a broken link to the image.

Why is this happening, and more importantly, can I stop it?

This could be down to your theme or one of your plugins. Have you tried:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

Looking like you're right. I changed to Twenty Eleven and the problem went away, re-enabled Atahualpa and it's back again.

Gah. Time to start trawling for any solutions!

Thanks for prodding me in a direction I should have been looking anyway!

Are you using the latest version of Atahualpa?

Yes, I am now. Just updated to 3.7.7 and retried. Same issue.

Thanks. I'll flag this up and see if anyone else can confirm it.

Thanks, Esmi. I've also posted on the Atahualpa forum and the first response I received (from one of the mods) was "image handling is core code and nothing to do with themes".

I'm tempted to agree with him in that it makes more sense, but in that case why would changing themes make a difference? It's a strange one!

FYI also just tried erasing all my Atahualpa settings back to default and checking. No change, problem still exists.

    As a possible aside...

When I publish posts, I use a plug-in to tweet a j.mp shortened link to them. I attach a hashtag of #fb which is picked up by Selected Tweets which pops a link onto facebook. Worked fine until this WordPress update.

The link makes its way through Twitter onto fb with no issues, but the image attached to the link isn't the one from the top of the post as it always has been. It's another one from elsewhere in my image library. Having tested a few times, it's always the *same* image from the library regardless of the image I actually put on the blog post.

Quite possible this *is* a plug-in issue, but I just thought I'd mention it :)

WordPress core only creates up to 3 extra images - thumbnail, medium and large sizes. Anything above those 3 has to come from the theme or a plugin.

OK, I have noticed "...._m" files being added, usually when I make use of an image from Zemanta and I have vague memories of setting something up regarding image sizes, which ones to store and so forth in WP somewhere.

These other ones are weird, though, and I can't think which plugin could be creating them. The testing, though, does point towards theme as I didn't disable any plugins, just went from Atahualpa to a standard theme.

Are you inserting these Zemanta images via Url or by upload?

Do you know if SlideDeck creates extra images? It seems I've been getting more of the same images since using it, but only a few. I now get up to 6 different sizes.

I use the Twenty Eleven theme and get four copies -the actual jpg, and a thumbnail, medium and large size. Which according to what you are saying is normal and can't be changed. Is that correct?
