  • I cannot understand why this forum does not have a search facility. I’m sure this question may have been asked before by someone else and possibly answered. It would take too much time to scroll through the over 300 pages to search for any related post!

I have a multi-site installation which is 7.14 GB in size which I believe indicates that I have issues somewhere that need to be resolved.

The site has approximately 52 sub-directories sites, however there is very little content at the moment. Approximately 1500 pages of text which are roughly an average of 500 words a piece and very few images.

So why is the site taking up so much disk space?

One thing I’ve noticed is that each of the sub-directories for the individual blogs (52 separate blogs) are showing multiple folders with full content (wordpress with wp-admin, wp-content, wp-includes etc.) which look like duplicates of each other! For example up to seven subfolders of this kind in each blog! They all have something like this included in the url: bbtmp5export4fd…..etc.

The size of the blogs.dir is 5.7 GB.

The size of the uploads directory is 1.39 GB.

The size of the backupbuddy_temp directory is 1.39 GB.

In the blogs.dir there are also directories inside each individual blog which contain bbtmp5export4fd….. files as well and these are 9.98 MB in size.

I hope some of what’s written here makes sense to someone who can perhaps shed some light on why the multi-site installations is using so much disk space and can tell me if some of these file should not be there.

    Thank you.

Search is on the front page: http://wordpress.org/support/ (left hand site)

The size of the uploads directory is 1.39 GB.

That means site #1 (your MAIN site) is using 1.39G

The size of the blogs.dir is 5.7 GB.

The other 51 blogs are using under 6G (.1 G each).

One thing I’ve noticed is that each of the sub-directories for the individual blogs (52 separate blogs) are showing multiple folders with full content (wordpress with wp-admin, wp-content, wp-includes etc.) which look like duplicates of each other!

What… subdirectiories? They’re supposed to be virtual.

    Hi Mike,

I’m not sure what going on here. I got directory structures that looks like this (I’ve coded what you see below somewhat for security purposes):

    public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/1112/files/bbtmp5export4fd…etc/wordpress

In the wordpress folder there seems to be a full version of wordpress, in other words wp_admin, wp_content, wp_content folders as well as wp_config-sample.php and so on.

So each blog directory has a “files” directory, and each files directory has in addition to a few other directories and a couple of files, up to ten directories of the type listed above (the bbtmp5export…..etc directories and each of these directories have the same last modified date of August 19th, 2012)!
