Muliple Post Categories Displayed in Thumbnail Grid

I’m currently redoing my portfolio website and am having all the thumbnails from my portfolio category display as a grid on the front page.

However, I can’t figure out how to display multiple categories on the page at once. I.e. I want to display all my Web Design posts under a title that says “Web,” and below that display all my animation posts under a title that says “Animation.”

I’m using a custom template to do this at the moment, but I can’t seem to make it work.

Any thoughts?
