• Hi Folks,
I recently was turned on to WP, after being a regular MT user for the last couple years. I’ve installed WP on my OS X laptop to try and understand how it works, withthe hope of changing over to WP on my live site. But I can’t get the MT import script to work.
I have installed WP on localhost, then did a SQL dump of my data from the MT database on my live site. I saved it on my computer and edited the file with the location of the dump file. When I run the upgrade script, it says “entry exists” for like three entries and then announces that it’s done and that I’m all set. But I have about 150 entries and 300 comments in the dump file. Nothing is getting imported. Can someone help me out here? I want to get my data into WP before I start playing with the config & design, so I can really see how my site will look. Any help appreciated!

  • You don’t need a database dump – I used an export file from MT, and the import script worked beautifully.

    1. Open mt.cgi
    2. Click on weblog you want to upgrade.
    3. Click “Import/Export” on the left menu
    4. Hold down shift and click the link at the bottom that says something like “Export entries from your blog”
    5. Upload the file you just downloaded to someplace on your web server.
    6. Edit import-mt.php with the path to the file.
    7. Voila!

Thanks a bunch. That did the job! I’d been using SQL dumps for backups for so long, I completely forgot about MT’s built-in import/export feature. The script worked a treat.

    Hi all,
I just imported a journal from MT to WP using the import utility and it worked like a charm (good work, developers!) I have a question, though: does the MT file have to be plain text (mt.txt, for example) or can it be an .htm or .html file?
I saved the export file originally as HTML then again as plain text for importing, and all the brackets for html tags were converted to their ASCII equivelents. This was a small journal so I could go through and edit without trouble, but I don’t want to do that again for the bigger journals I’d like to import too.
    Any suggestions?
