MS Office 2007 Group Docs display as garbled files (7 posts)

    We have recently upgrade in a stepwise fashion from WP 3.1.1 to 3.8 and from BP 1.28 to BP 1.8. Upgraded BP Group Docs to 1.5 along the way. We have numerous MS-Office 2007 documents which cannot be read. Clicking on a .pptx file, for instance, yields something that looks like this (the first few lines only...):

    PK!&[Content_Types].xml (Zێ0}@VCnU}婗v.8 - ;1 rdl% fΙ^{"l,̣8ۭߏf8"YGW#%Wgl9bឤsJ26/RaCbq<$3^7_@GĻSQKėz 1Ib.,m(6a]&siMi 8['h*ۗb

    We can take the same .pptx file, manually put it in the root directory, and it downloads, invokes Powerpoint, and displays normally. Have checked & rechecked Apache mime.types and don't think that's the issue. Googled the web & support forums and haven't found an answer.

    FWIW, PDF files in the same group document directory display normally also. Valid formats are set as: odt, rtf, txt, doc, docx, xls, xlsx, ppt, pps, pptx, pdf, jpg, jpeg, gif, png, zip, tar, gz

    Thanks in advance for any guidance you can offer!

    PS - Have encountered this problem at pretty much every step, i.e., with WP 3.5.2/BP 1.7 along with our current WP 3.8/BP1.8...don't think it's a compatability issue with WP 3.8 particularly...

    Follow up note - our entire site is https. Could this matter?

    reggie hi.
    Sorry to hear that you have that kind of problems.
    Unfontunately I haven't any expertice on https behavior.
    If you try to add the pptx as multimedia attachment to a wordpress post does it display correctly?

    I've been having an issue with docx/xlsx documents where Internet Explorer 8 downloads them as zips.

    Not sure if this is related, but changing line 115 in include > filters.php (v1.7) to:
    header('Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="' . $file_deets[1] . '"');
    fixes the problem.

    Is there a particular reason for having it set to download the files inline instead of as attachments?

    This is a good catch.
    I will update the code according in the next version

    This hasn't been updated in 1.8. Was that deliberate? Does using 'attachment' break something?
