• I have been reading as many posts on the forum and I hope this has not been dealt with. Please remember I am the embodiment of the truism “there are no stupid questions, just stupid people asking questions”.

I installed WP last week and thought I would incorporate the blog into a larger site. After working with WP I’ve decided I want to use it for the entire site.

Currently the blog resides at http://mysite.com/blog and I want it at http://mysite can I do this and what do I need to do to get it done.

    Thanks.

    Thanks for the quick response.

I will read these over and then wreak havoc 🙂

Alright. Here’s where I am. I was able to follow the instructions of changing the directory within wp itself. Easy nuf. However, the next line simply states:

Move your WordPress core files to the new location. This includes the files found within the original directory, such as http://example.com/wordpress, and all the sub-directories, to the new location.

After a bit of searching, I recognized that the ‘core files’ refer to the wp files themself that are hosted on my server. What I don’t understand is how to move them to the new location.

Is this accomplished by editing certain files, or do I need to reinstall WP? If I need to reinstall, how do I protect what I already have?

    Havoc has been wreaked!

The way I would move them, if you want to have everything at the root level, would be to make a back up of the files on my computer (download via FTP), and then re-upload them to the new location AFTER following all the steps in the instructions.

A simpler way to do it, since you already have them in the “blog” directory, is to just move index.php and .htaccess to the root, again AFTER reading the instructions on http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory

The blog will be at the root level domain.com

[to copy locally to your computer .htaccess, rename it and take the (dot) away before download, or the file may be hidden in your computer, then rename it again with the (dot) after upload]

To protect what you have, backup your database first, just in case + you will have a local backup of your files (theme and such).

What do you mean by changing the directory within wp itself? Did you just rename the folder? Or did you move files around?

Under General – Settings there are two lines the instructions told me to change. Originally it was http://mysite.com/blog and I changed the WordPress address (URL)and the Blog address (URL)to http://mysite.com/

Of course this fragged the site. But I was told to expect that until the changes to the core are accomplished.

Yes, that’s fine! Proceed with the other steps.
