Moving WP from Subdirectory to Whole Site (4 posts)

    Hi everyone,

I currently have WP installed into a subdirectory (domain.com/blog) of my site. The rest of the website is just static HTML pages.

I want to switch to the Headway theme and use WP for my whole site. How should I best do this? Should I export the blog into an XML file, delete the other pages and then re-install wordpress in the root and then import? Then delete the old installation? Is there a better way?

I'm fine with creating new pages and manually inserting the text from my old static pages, but I'd like to try to keep my posts' rankings. Will i be able to re-create the permalink structure of domain.com/blog/postname and make the blog homepage domain.com/blog?

I understand this may be more of an issue with my webhost (I use Godaddy) than just WP, but still thought this would be the best place to ask. Are there any other issues I should be aware of when doing this?

    Thanks so much.

You can move the exiting html website to folder and then you have two ways to move wordpress instructions here

Thanks. Have read through the instructions. At one point it says "make sure all index.php, .htaccess, and other files that might be copied over are backed up and/or moved."

I just realized that I have two .htaccess files, one in the root folder and one in the blog folder. I don't know anything about how they work, is this problematic? See http://pastebin.com/KqjY2u5u

    Thanks again.

I assume that you have decided to use wordpress from folder then all you need to do is copy index.php file in root and add your folder name in line 17 and reset your permalinks.
when you reset your permalinks wordpress will rewrite .htaccess file
