• I’m taking over a site from someone who developed it andI have followed the codex instructions on moving a WP site from a directory into the root. Except when I come to the instruction to change the addresses

(Go to the Administration > Settings > General panel.
In the box for WordPress Address (URL): change the address to the new location of your main WordPress core files.
In the box for Site Address (URL): change the address to the new location, which should match the WordPress (your public site) address.)

The boxes for these changes are missing in the theme he has used. (I checked with that theme on a development site and they are missing there, too) I then tried export/import, including the database, and that doesn’t work either.

I really need to get this site moved into the root and cannot find anything to give me a hint on how to do it without these items. Can anyone please help me?

  • I think it would be best to leave it where it is, but I will not trouble you with my list of reasons.

Is this the Primary Domain for that account? My experience is limited to shared servers first at BlueHost and now at Arvixe, but I suspect it would be much more tricky to point to an Add-On Domain in root than it can be to point to a Primary Domain that happens to be located in a sub-folder.

As far as I know, the theme should not have any effect at the Dashboard where displays are not dependent upon a theme. Overall, your best bet might be to ask whether a Support Tech at the Host might come take a look to try to see what might actually be going on there.

In discussion with the designer about how he would initiate this move, he told me that he had never moved a “multisite” installation before and didn’t know how. This was the first I had heard of it being multisite and I did not have any experience with that either. (Not to mention that multisite is not appropriate for this instance)

The codex was very helpful for this. Once I was able to turn off the multisite, the factors I needed for the move showed up in the settings and I will be moving the site later today.

    Thank you for your reply.
