Moving posts from wordpress.com to a self-hosted blog? (5 posts)

    Kind of a strange question, and I'm totally prepared for there being no answer. But what the heck, I thought I'd try.

    When I started my blog, it was on wordpress.com. After a few months I started self-hosting and abandoned the original site. There are a few posts from over there that I'd like to move to the newer site because of their popularity.

    The easy solution (and one I'll probably have to use unless someone has a better idea) would be for me to cut and paste them into new posts. However, what I'd rather do is;

    1. Find a way to bring the comments along with the post
    2. Find a way to get the original link to redirect to the new post

    Anybody have any experience/thoughts on the subject?

    We have experience because we look around in our admin panel(s) - ;)
    On wp.com - you have an export feature.
    On your own blog - you have an import facility.

    Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. :)

    If I do this, won't it import everything? I'm only looking to move a few posts over. Also -- wouldn't it overwrite what is already on my newer blog? I'm 3 months and nearly 300 posts in, so I'm obviously not willing to lose all of that.

    The import/export function is written so that it will pull in posts that don't exist and not import posts that are already there. That is the safeguard. It only 'adds to' and doesn't over write. That is what is good about it.

    If I have 5 sites on wordpress.com and want to bring them into my 1 hosted site, I just import them each individually and magically I have 1 hosted site with all the posts and comments from my 5 wp.com sites.

    The way the import/export is written though, you cannot just pick which ones you pull over. All or nothing and then delete the ones off the new location that you don't want.
