When you moved your developer site to the production site, did you then copy the WordPress database tables or just the files?

Yes I did a export from Phpmyadmin and then imported the sql file to phpmyadmin on the production site

So the created content aware sidebars still exist and are available in the widgets area, but all widgets are gone.

If both installs are completely the same, then I don’t know why the problem occurs – widgets from content aware sidebars are saved exactly the same place and in the same way as the widgets in the sidebars created by your theme/other plugin.

Have you tried importing the database again? Especially the options table because this is where WordPress saves widgets.
