Support » Fixing WordPress » Moving blog from subdomain to main domain

  • Hello! I am a new WordPress user and I admit I have no clue what I’m doing.

I want to build a blog and online community with member profiles and forums. Right now my main URL is a static page, and I want to build the site under a subdomain, specifically When it’s ready for the public, I want to move it to

Is this even possible and what is the level of difficulty in doing this? Is this maybe something my host provider can help me with?

I apologize if this is a dumb question but I do appreciate your help. I did a quick search but didn’t see any topics that seem to match my specific need.

  • Mindy,

There is extensive helpful information on the process of moving WordPress installations in the Codex:

Thank you for responding Rachel! I looked at that page but it’s honestly all gibberish to me. I guess what I’m asking is: Can I what I described above be easily done (by someone I hire who understands WordPress better than I)?

    Hi Mindy,
If you hire someone who has worked with WordPress, he/she should be able to help you.
Your hosting provider depending on who it is, won’t be able to help. Most of them don’t offer third party support.

If you wanted to an easier option, would be to set up WordPress on your final url and use a plugin like
This will display a coming soon page to users who are not logged in. Since you’ll be working on the site and logged in, you’ll be able to make your changes.

Once ready to go live, you won’t have to do all the complicated moving step.

Christine! I think this plug-in will work for what I’m needing! You’re a major stress-saver! Thank you!!
