  • Hi
I am trying to move my site from one host to another as it’s quite large but the second host has been incapable of moving the database. I have tried downloading and uploading the content but nothing seems to work. Suggestions welcome.
    Thanks
    Paul

  • Hi @paulharrison,

in case you did not try it before, I’d suggest you to take a look at the available plugins for the task.

Let me know if that could help you.

I tried a plug-in but it wouldn’t get past 66% of the download

I see, @paulharrison: did you also tried to deactivate all your other plugins as well? It is often the solution to many problems…

Some of my sites have large SQL files. Take a look at https://sqldumpsplitter.net which has saved my hide a few times.

Since you’re crashing at 66% I’d split down to 5 or 6 files. Just import them into the database via phpMyAdmin in order is the way I do it…

If I tried it out of order I’d probably break something or forget one file.

If your old and new hosting are both using cPanel, your new host can use cPanel to migrate the database, and it will not time out. (Actually if this is the case, you should find a new host because the one you chose is incompetent.)

Otherwise, ask your old host whether you have access to something called SSH. If you do, it will be possible to generate a copy of your database that could be downloaded via FTP. And if your new host has SSH access, it will be possible migrate the generated database directly as opposed to using FTP to download from the old site and upload to the new site. You new host should be able to handle the entire process if you provide the SSH credentials to your old site. (I’d be a little concerned about your new host if they never asked you about SSH access to your old site.)
