Support » Fixing WordPress » Moved Blog and lost pages…

  • I moved my blog files from my host to my desktop (not realizing there were other ways to do it online) by copying the folders in the ftp client.

When I moved the files back to the server via FTP, all of the surrounding stuff is there– headers and sidebars, etc., but none of the actual ‘content’.

Where can I find the pages to restore it? It’s only 13 or so pages, but re-building the information is nearly impossible.

I promise (in the future) to do a proper backup rather than just a ‘slide’.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I was unable to find the answer. THANKS!

Ask your host provider if they have the backup and if they can restore to the point before this problem.

Did you make changes to the files when they were on your desktop?

The content should still exist on your web hosting account within a database that was setup. You just need to reconfigure your files to connect to the database again in order to display the content.

my host is restoring from back up as we speak.

However, I want to learn where these things are…for future reference. I did not make changes to the files when they were on my desktop. Can I look in there somewhere for the content I’m missing? Can you tell me how?

content (like posts and pages) is stored in the database at your server. Your hosting provider sould be able to guide you how to access your databases on their server.

The files in WordPress do not contain the content of your posts. That content is contained within the database.

To access your database you will have to login to your webhost and look for a program called phpMyAdmin most likely. This program will allow you to look into your database and see the content. However, if you have no idea what you are doing or looking at I highly recommend not accessing your database as you can easily create a lot of problems that can be hard to diagnose and fix.

If you do have an interest in looking into the backend stuff with WordPress and how it all works I’d suggest installing a local sever on your computer (WAMP if you have Windows/MAMP if you are using a Mac) and then setting up a WordPress install on that.

Or you can always setup another WordPress install on your webhost in a separate domain and test things out that way.

So if I moved the stuff to my desktop (all the folders I could see), and uninstalled wordpress (which I installed using SimpleScripts) I have wiped out my database? Is that correct?

Not sure on that one, it is possible that SimpleScripts could have deleted the database as well.

Is there a phpMyAdmin or other “database” program listed under your account that you can use to see if the database is still intact?

    found phpMyAdmin!

So for next time, I’ll know.

    But the complete restore worked.

    THANKS!
