Support » Installing WordPress » Move installation or reinstall?

  • I helped a friend set up a blog on her website. The decision was made to install it at herdomain/blog. It is brand new, with no posts or anything yet. Now she says she wants it at herdomain/thenameofherblog, rather than in just /blog. She wants the name of her blog to show in the url. If I move the install for her, are there only a few places to change the address of the blog? Or are there also things that would need to be changed in the new database.

I ask, because if it is tricky to move it, I could just delete the whole thing and reinstall it in the new folder named for her blog’s title.

Follow those instructions precisely and you should have no issues.

Thank you Otto. Is there any reason I should try to talk her out of using a hyphen in her path to the new location. She wants to install in a folder name that includes a dash. Like this:

No reason but makes it harder for people to remember.

Regardless of move or reinstall, you should be able to just use something like your host’s File Manager, or FTP like Filezilla, to rename the blog folder to whatever name you desire. Meaning you shouldn’t have to upload another copy of WordPress.
