That’s the expected behaviour: when you enable Jetpack’s dev mode or work in a local environment, you cannot use any of the modules requiring a connection to WordPress.com.

You should, however, be able to activate the modules that do not require a connection to WordPress.com: Carousel, Sharing, Gravatar Hovercards, Contact form, Shortcode embeds, Custom CSS, Mobile Theme, and Extra Sidebar Widgets.

This should be mentioned on top of the jetpack dashboard AND install info on wp resp. Dont asume that developers, even old ones, got it. Many of us are developing on local servers or localhost. And for me, all years never use the .org accounts and proud “disable gravatar” stuff. A clean install with WP on a localhost talks a lot with calling home and connections. It s more likley you think the connections are working rather than have to go live ti enable 80% of the “plugins”.

That’s a good idea. I took note of your idea here, and we’ll consider adding a notice to the dashboard in a future Jetpack update.

    Thanks!

Just want to “+1” this – I just spent a good part of a day trying to find out why I couldn’t enable any JetPack features. Def need a notice.
