modify php in parent or child?

the person who replied gave a solution that worked, but the php file that was modified was in the parent theme. I made this same edit with positive results, but I’m afraid that when WordPress next updates I’ll lose that edit. Should I copy my php file to my child theme for safekeeping? I already have at least a dozen css changes in my child style.css but in this case I don’t think that matters. Thanks!
