 * I have an existing plugin that has been deactivated because a new version was
   released. I quite liked the features of the old plugin.
 * Can I modify/build upon this plugin without it being deactivated again by the
   original author

 * You can, sort of.
 * If I’m right, the way to do it is to download the old plugins ZIP file and then
   eidt it to change the name of the plugin in it’s main PHP file then change the
   name of the folder and the main PHP file to a new name. If you do that it should
   look for a different name in the plugins DB so you should be safe enough.
