# Mobile login only issue

 * I have a weird issue that started with 4.1 and at first I thought it was the
   actual system. Here’s the setup.
 * I run MacOS Yosemite on my MacMini and MacBook Pro, iPhones and iPads. We’re
   a pretty Apple centric home.
 * When the auto-update to 4.1 kicked in, I lost a lot of functionality on the backend.“
Stick to home page” stopped working, the login defaulted to the mobile login.
This has been seen on multiple devices using multiple networks (work, home, etc).
I was able to force the desktop site on our Android tablet. Does anyone have
any idea why this might be happening and/or have a suggestion on how I might
   fix this?

 * Try deactivating all plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one
individually until you find the cause.
 * If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the Twenty Fifteen theme
to rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

 * That’s the fun part… I (just today) did a full backup, and dry install into an
empty site and the same issues exist. As mentioned before, the mobile site is
being forced, only when using the “request full desktop” version from Chrome
on an Android device did we find the problem.

 * Ok, so how about the troubleshooting steps I posted?

 * It was a dry install, zero plugins installed and/or activated. Zero content.
No themes other than the default active.

 * I find that odd since WordPress has no “mobile site” without using plugins. The
Dashboard and Twenty Fifteen themes re-shape with the size of the screen, but
there is no separate mobile mode with a way to switch between mobile and desktop.
 * Are you absolutely sure you are using no plugins and no themes besides the default
   theme? Please, be honest.
 * If so, would you please describe what you mean by the “mobile site” being forced?

 * The only way to describe it is the login screen looks like the mobile login.
For instance, when accessing a site via a phone, you get a different login screen.
Unless you use something like Chrome where you can force the site to act like
a desktop site. This is what I’m talking about except that it’s happening across
every device I own. I’m being as honest as a person can be. I’m trying to figure
out why my systems suddenly lost all that functionality when things switched
   to 4.1.
 * As such, over the weekend I decided to backup the site and do a full reinstall
of everything. The entire thing was backed up, wiped out and reinstalled. Before
doing anything else I installed wordpress. No plug ins, no themes, NOTHING. Just
the core install package. Nothing changed. That’s why I’m trying to figure this
out. What changed between 4.0 and 4.1 that broke the functionality on the end
user side of things. This is my confusion.

 * Nothing really, that’s why I’m confused too.
 * Let’s approach this from a different way. What functionality have you lost?

 * I’ve been poking around a bit, and one screen gave away a hint. Specifically
the media management window said “javascript must be enabled…” now, again, this
was a clean installation, I’d changed exactly nothing, and installed the files
clean slate. No plug ins (except for the default stuff that comes with WP like
Akismet, etc) and no external third party themes. So somewhere the javascript
   is broken…

 * That means Javascript is disabled *in your browser* not WordPress. Please make
   sure you have enabled Javascript.

 * It’s enabled, has been tested across Safari, Firefox and Chrome all with the
   same results on multiple devices.
 * I should also note, I help run another WP self-hosted site on another server
and do not have the same issues. As such, I’m sure you can imagine, this is incredibly
   frustrating/puzzling.

 * Hm, that’s very odd.
 * First, please make sure that your browser is up to date by visiting [http://whatbrowser.org/](http://whatbrowser.org/)
 * If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.
 * If it is, please do these two things:
 * 1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
 * 2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
 * Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version
of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.

 * All that has been done as well on each version of each browser, all up to date,
no changes. Normally I’d assume the JavaScript permissions on the individual
browsers would’ve been the culprit, but with Java, the browsers, and a clean
install to the server… I’m at a complete loss. I’ve tried dumping caches, all
   cookies, etc. No change.

 * FYI – Browsers checked are
    Safari 8 Firefox 29 Chrome 42
 * All current.

 * Java is entirely separate from JavaScript.
 * 1. Are you sure you enabled *JavaScript*?
 * 2. Is this a completely fresh installation, and if so did you do it manually
   or through your host’s installer?
 * 3. Have you tried in a different browser?

 * 1. Yes, absolutely… I’ve gone through and checked everything I could possibly
check. I know what JavaScript is, I know how to both enable and disable it. I
   assure you, it’s enabled.
 * 2. When I say clean install, I mean I wiped the site completely off the server(
apart from my media files which were moved to a different area outside my public_html
folders). The installation was a manual install, I hate using the script installers
   on the servers.
 * 3a. As mentioned, I’ve checked using Safari, Firefox, and Chrome… all current
versions. And for good measure, I’ve even checked using Opera on the desktop.
Mobile browsers on iOS were Safari and Chrome.
 * 3b. I also used Chrome on my Android tablet and was able to use the “request
desktop site” function and that restores the JavaScript issue and gives me full
functionality. But that was the only way I was able to get it.
 * 4. I’ve made sure all my security settings on all the devices were not in some
   way blocking JavaScript.
 * 5. All operating system software, ancillary software is up to date.
 * 6. All caches and files relating to websites were purged. System rebooted… same
   results.
 * As you might see, I’ve tried pretty much everything and my resulting annoyance(
especially given the secondary site on another server that functions just fine
so we know it’s not me)… is there a way to see if something on my server is causing
a problem. I’ve looked at the error logs and there’s nothing saying there’s a
problem, no errors relating to JavaScript files, etc.
