Support » Fixing WordPress » Missing: “Your comment is awaiting moderation”

Prior to the most recent WP update (4.9.8), when a comment that contained two or more links was posted to my site, that comment was held for moderation, and the person who posted the comment was shown a message at the top of their submission which read, “Your comment is being held for moderation.”

Now, such comments are still being held for moderation, but no notice is being provided. The comment is sent, but doesn’t display, meaning the person who wrote the comment has no way of knowing what happened.

I don’t know where that feedback message went, but it is important and should be retained in future versions.

First off, check this setting in dashboard:

settings -> discussion -> Comment Moderation Hold a comment in the queue if it contains or more links. (A common characteristic of comment spam is a large number of hyperlinks.)

The setting is set as it always was, and as you noted.

If a comment has 2 or more links, it will be held for moderation.

What is missing is the notice to the person leaving the comment, as noted in the post above.

Previously, a comment that was held for moderation — for any reason — triggered notice: “Your comment is being held for moderation”.

What changed is that I am now not seeing that notice being shown.

T rule out a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

If you can install plugins, install “Health Check”: https://wordpress.org/plugins/health-check/ On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

Thank you for taking the time to point me to that discussion.

Makes me crazy when something breaks, but at least now I know why….

(Notwithstanding the new GDPR requirements, WordPress should still inform users what they’re seeing. No one who takes the time to leave a comment should be left baffled by what happened to their comment.)

    ** Update

…except…I’m not seeing a checkbox anywhere that says, “…save my name and email for…”

My theme does have a couple of options for receiving notices if anyone comments to a reply or a thread, but because the default is none of the above, it’s still possible for people to be royally confused.

    (Including me.)

    ** Later update

Yeah…so I tried setting the notification in my theme, but that still provided no information about my comment being held for moderation. So maybe my theme is suppressing that checkbox?

    Totally flying blind here……………………

    @smartyp,

Please do not jump into other topics. If the troubleshooting already posted made no difference for you, then, as per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topic. A lot more people will see your post this way. That way you stand a good chance of getting the assistance you want. Despite any similarity in symptoms, your issue is likely to be completely different because of possible differences in physical servers, accounts, hosts, plugins, theme, configurations, etc. Thus one problem, on one setup is not indicative of the functionality and reliability of an application as a whole.
