• I’m a first time blogger and just installed WordPress 2.8.4 via the one-click install in Dreamhost.

I’m the only user and admin for my site, with full privileges, and have done some light configuration so far, including selecting a standard Theme. So far, so good. Now, I would like to get into the theme editor and customize, so following the instructions in the Codex, I’m looking for the “Appearances/editor” subpanel, which appears to be missing from my Admin Panels. Currently, I only have the /Themes and /Widgets subpanel options available. While I’m at it, I also note that I am missing /Add New and /Editor from the Plug Ins menu.

Did I miss something in the install process perhaps?

  • I just checked my test installation that is 2.8.4 installed from scratch with no customization. And the missing Admin panels are certainly there. And work properly.

I have had problems with Fantastico installs before. I’m not sure what DreamHost uses for their one-click installs, but I would report the problem to their Support folks and see what they say. I know for a fact that their maintenance people have been making a lot of mistakes lately.

Or just install a second copy of WordPress from here: http://wordpress.org/download/
    Using the doc. here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress

In my experience, web host-supplied installs for major software like WordPress, phpBB, etc. are trouble down the line, as they don’t provide any upgrade service, so you end up doing that “on your own” (i.e. – with the standard WordPress or phpBB automatic upgrader), which is not reflected back to the web host’s installer. So, the web host info says you are on Version 2.8.4 when you are really on 2.9.3 after several upgrades. All very confusing.

Besides, with WordPress, the 5 minute install provided by the WordPress development team is easy and fast enough for me….
