 * I took over this website and want to update it to 4.9.8 but it’s missing the
message to update on the dashboard. I tried following the directions at [https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors](https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors)

thinking I had a script error and used the WP_DEBUG script but I get a message
about the new update which is the current version! I only found one article on
the internet about this and find it hard to believe that there isn’t more info.
   Any ideas?
 * The page I need help with: _[[log in](https://login.wordpress.org/?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.org%2Fsupport%2Ftopic%2Fmissing-message-to-update-wordpress%2F%3Foutput_format%3Dmd&locale=en_US)
   to see the link]_

 * If you wait a little bit it will probably tell you to update soon. These things
run on cronjobs so it’ll realize it’s behind.
 * Or you could go the path less traveled by and update WordPress the hard way.

 * Did you try turning it off and on?

 * ^^^ LOL. Seriously try it.
 * But yeah, either wait like fmixell said or just go ahead and do the manual install.
It looks scarier than it really is.

 * I don’t think it’s going to show up because I’m missing the message that tells
you what version you are using and that never goes away. I wanted to update before
enacting SSL. The extended update does look scary and I may have to try it. Where
do you turn it off and on? If it’s in wp-config, I did that.

 * Hi [@iacino](https://wordpress.org/support/users/iacino/),
 * Have you checked this page in your wp-admin?
 * You should be able to see the list of things that need to be updated in your
   WP installation.
 * If you still can’t see the WP version in that page, it’s possible that the previous
admin added a plugin or function to not showing it.
 * If you think is the case, check the list of plugins looking for one which removes
   the WP version or similar.
 * But in case you can’t find any plugin, check the files of the activated theme
looking for something like these snippets:
