    Hi,

I deactivated all plugins and activated them back 1 by 1 until the “bold” “italic” “link” buttons showed up again, and it happened when I activated Wordfence.

Any idea how to solve this?

    Thanks

    Hi,
Actually, when adding back all plugins one by one, it happened again after activating a different plugin. And now all plugins are activated but the toolbar has all buttons in it. Puzzled here.

Sometimes it happens that the dashboard links to “plugins”, “appearance”, etc result in a “nothing here” page. Also the link to display differences in the files (compare them with the original) to which Wordfence detected changes, rarely work. They give a weird version of the home page. That’s one of the reasons I thought Wordfence was conflicting.

If you know any procedures I can take to find what is causing all these conflicts, I would be very grateful.

    Cheers
    Rod

Hi @nomadarod, this does sound like a strange case and judging by the order of the plugin activations not being specific to Wordfence, the cause doesn’t seem too clear.

I can say that I’ve not seen other customers from the sizeable amount of Wordfence installations out there reporting issues with the editor’s bold, italic button functions. When Wordfence is first installed, it spends a 7 day period in Learning Mode so shouldn’t be blocking these kinds of functions. However, you could try clicking on Manage WAF from the Wordfence dashboard. Then you will see Basic Firewall Options > Web Application Firewall Status. Change the option to Learning Mode. Now perform the actions and click through any pages that were causing issues. This will help Wordfence learn that these actions are normal and it will allow them in the future. After you have finished performing the actions, switch the WAF from Learning Mode back to Enabled and Protecting. Now test to see if these actions work correctly.

Let me know if you find anything new, or whether issues stop occurring,

    Peter.

    Hi Peter,
I did as you suggested: Firewall in learning mode and repeat the tasks that were resulting in strange behaviors and then Firewall back as “enabled” and repeating the tasks. No strange behaviors at all this time. It didn’t happen every time, so it is hard to say. But one thing I noticed before is that the “plugins” and other dashboard links resulting in a “nothing here” page happen after I check for the Wordfence dashboard links, but I don’t recall any episode if I do these links first thing when entering the dashboard and only then check the Wordfence live traffic and so on. I tested this now and it didn’t happen though ^_^

That’s very good news, it could have been linked to some background tasks from other plugins being identified as false-positives hence why Learning Mode helped here.

By all means start a new topic if you have further Wordfence questions crop up in future and we’ll always be glad to assist you!

    Peter.
