Support » Fixing WordPress » Migration from one url to another url

  • First off let me state that I am very new using wordpress. I have however been maintaining sites using dreamweaver, etc for many years.

    Here is my question.

I currently have a large website up and running it is a .com site

I am currently building a wordpress site to replace it. I am using our .org site for this “test” site. Once I have inputed all the content, formatted, tested it etc. I want to convert the .org test site to the .com url.

I want to make sure all linkage (i am using permalinks) gets converted from .org to .com when I make the move, etc. I cannot really afford any downtime other than the time it takes to take down the .com site….migrate the new data over to that server…and then upload.

    Any help is appreciated.

  • So long as you are not hand coding any urls in your content or theme, you should be fine. Just change the wordpress address and site address under General Settings.

WordPress combines the permalink path that you set on your post with the home_url on the fly – every time (assuming you’re not doing any caching).

For the general setting you are referring to the new location?

If I change domain name, etc in general settings under the original I will lose access…and that creates problems.

If you’re worried about it, then hard code them in wp-config.php.

FWIW, I do development everyday on multiple wordpress sites, all done in sandbox (such as yourself). I push to live sites (using rsync) which have very different domain names. Never had a problem switching home and site urls on the fly.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.
